Otherworldly: Deborah Turbeville Photographs
January 17–April 6, 2024

This exhibition from The Image Centre collection presents more than 40 photographic works spanning the innovative career of American photographer Deborah Turbeville (1932–2013), from her major fashion commissions of the 1970s to the more personal projects of her later years. Widely credited with evolving the editorial genre of fashion photography into an art form, Turbeville de-emphasized the clothed figure in her pioneering compositions, whose often-decaying settings reinforce their dreamlike atmosphere. Experimental techniques such as soft focus, the use of printing papers with varied tones and textures, distressing or tearing of the print, and the application of masking tape or other collage elements contribute to the photographs’ otherworldly aesthetic.

Peyton Keeler-Cox: Questions Nobody Asked Me

March 6–April 6, 2024

In Questions Nobody Asked Me Peyton Keeler-Cox presents a series of photographs that connect to themes of memory, loss, grief, and care. Over many years, Keeler-Cox and her family developed a deep relationship with their neighbour Roy. Before his passing, Roy entrusted the family with the management of his estate. It is here, in Roy’s home, that Keeler-Cox pays homage to the memory of this friendship, taking photographs of spaces and possessions, and herself in relationship with them, and him. Peyton was the last person to see Roy alive. In this touching project, her photographs aim to bring his memory back into the house’s bare rooms and insert her presence as the caretaker of his remembrances and stories.

Featuring more than thirty-five stories about historic events and personalities, this exhibition explores the important role of photo agencies during the heyday of print photojournalism. Drawing from The Image Centre’s famous Black Star press photography collection as well as the archive of Canada’s national news agency, The Canadian Press, the selection spans the twentieth century—from the British movement for women’s right to vote, through the Watts riots in Los Angeles, to the Oka Crisis in Quebec. Each story illuminates a different aspect of how photojournalists have worked to document the news and distribute their photographs for publication.

Generously supported by media sponsors The Toronto Star and blogTO.

January 17–April 6, 2024

Talashi (Arabic for fragmentation, erosion, disappearance) is a video composition made up of personal photographs entrusted to French artist Alexis Cordesse by refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war, ongoing since 2011. Cordesse’s long, patient process of amassing intimate snapshots of family celebrations and quotidian activities challenges the never-ending flood of tragic and violent images produced and widely disseminated by the mainstream media.

Alexis Cordesse: Talashi

January 17–April 6, 2024

Talashi (Arabic for fragmentation, erosion, disappearance) is a video composition made up of personal photographs entrusted to French artist Alexis Cordesse by refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war, ongoing since 2011. Cordesse’s long, patient process of amassing intimate snapshots of family celebrations and quotidian activities challenges the never-ending flood of tragic and violent images produced and widely disseminated by the mainstream media.

Over many years, Keeler-Cox and her family developed a deep relationship with their neighbor Roy. Before his passing, Roy entrusted the family with the management of his estate. .

Artist Biography

Peyton Keeler-Cox is a photographer and storyteller with a BFA in Photography Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University. Drawing on themes of personal memory, grief, truth, and belonging, her practice investigates and activates the family archive to process and respond to lived experiences.

Admission is always free.

[more+]

Multi-GRAMMY and Oscar winner Jon Batiste is one of today’s most prolific and accomplished musicians. Born and raised in New Orleans, Batiste studied and received both a B.A. and M.F.A. at the world-renowned Juilliard School in New York City. From 2015 until 2022, Batiste served as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS. In 2018, he received a Grammy nomination for Best American Roots, and in 2020, he received two Grammy nods for the albums: CHRONOLOGY OF A DREAM: LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD and MEDITATIONS (with Cory Wong).

Batiste composed and performed music for the Disney/Pixar film SOUL, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score alongside fellow composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. He is the second black composer in history, after legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock, to win an Academy Award for composition. SOUL also earned Batiste a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a NAACP Image Award and a Critic’s Choice Award.

Batiste’s album WE ARE was released in March 2021 to overwhelming critical acclaim. Subsequently, he was nominated for eleven Grammys across seven different categories, a first in Grammy history. He went on to win five of those Grammys, including Album of the Year.

Batiste’s latest studio album, World Music Radio — featuring collaborators including Jon Bellion, Lana Del Rey, Lil, Wayne, and more — draws inspiration from his mission to create community with the power of music. The album received widespread critical acclaim for its universal message and genre-defying sound, hailed by NPR as “a sprawling exploration of what global music can sound like,” and by the Associated Press as “a mesmerizing way to dial into Batiste’s eclectic and wide musicality.”

[more+]

Théâtre français de Toronto (TfT) is proud to present Mononk Jules, a one-man show from Illusions Fabuleuses productions playing from March 20 to 23, 2024 at the TfT studio located at 21 College Street, 6th floor. Performed by author, actor and puppeteer Jocelyn Sioui, this docu-theatre delves into the little-known story of Jules Sioui, an Indigenous hero as well as the artist's great-uncle, whose fight for self-determination left its mark on Canadian History.

An emblematic figure in the History of Canada's First Nations, Jules Sioui (1906-1990) was a pioneer in the fight for self-determination for Indigenous peoples. A member of the Wendat community, he left his mark on his era through his relentless campaigning against segregation and for the recognition of the rights of Indigenous communities. Founder of the Assembly of First Nations, Jules Sioui distinguished himself by his unwavering commitment to the fight for social justice, using civil disobedience as a means of pressure against assimilationist and discriminatory government policies.

His life was marked by several arrests as a result of his activism, but this never deterred him from continuing his fight. On several occasions, he even used hunger strikes to draw attention to the injustices suffered by indigenous peoples. His motto, "Believe or die", testifies to his unshakeable determination in this struggle.

Jules Sioui's career, while heroic, also has its tragic aspects, not least the posthumous neglect of his major contributions.

In Mononk Jules, Jocelyn Sioui seeks to remedy this injustice by rehabilitating the memory of his great-uncle and highlighting his legacy. Surrounded by screens, boxes, archives, models and puppets, the multi-talented artist delivers a masterful performance that sheds light on the life of a man who should never have been confined to the shadows of History.

[more+]

Celebrate the opening of Peyton Keeler-Cox's exhibition Questions Nobody Asked Me, on view in the IMC Student Gallery through April 6, 2024.

About the Exhibition

In Questions Nobody Asked Me Peyton Keeler-Cox presents a series of photographs that connect to themes of memory, loss, grief, and care. Over many years, Keeler-Cox and her family developed a deep relationship with their neighbor Roy. Before his passing, Roy entrusted the family with the management of his estate. .
