Sean Bellaviti is a Toronto-based pianist, composer, and arranger. His musical interests are broad, but tend toward the cross-section of jazz and Latin American popular musical styles.
Born in Spain, raised in Italy, and trained in Toronto, Sean is a well-established figure in Canada’s world music scene. His induction into Latin American performance traditions occurred principally north of the 42nd parallel—far removed from the traditional geographies yet very much in keeping with contemporary Latin American cultural flows. While formally trained as a jazz musician, Sean’s love of Afro-Cuban popular music traditions led to a bourgeoning interest in the pan-American music par excellence: salsa in its many guises. To date Sean is a leading musician in the Canadian salsa revival and has performed with the who’s who of the idiom, including Eddie Santiago, Herman Olivera and Jimmy Bosch, among many others.
With his ensemble made up of piano, bass and drums, Sean brings together his love of groovy dance rhythms, extended improvisation and group interaction. His group’s repertoire is intentionally diverse, covering Central and South American folk genres, Cuban son montuno standards, selected jazz pieces, as well as original compositions. The Sean Bellaviti Trio can be described as interactive, toe-tapping, high-energy music that is at its root a descarga or jam session. Notable appearances include the Pan Am Games (2015), Salsa on St. Clair (2018), and Lulaworld (2019).
Play the Parks is presented by TD Bank, produced by the Downtown Yonge BIA.
